Agnes Scott College, founded in 1889, is an independent national liberal arts college for women located in the metropolitan Atlanta area, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Agnes Scott College was established with a distinctive mission: to educate women for the betterment of their families and the elevation of their region. Today, that mission has evolved into a commitment to educate women from around the world to “think deeply, live honorably and engage the intellectual and social challenges of their time.”
The college was named in honor of Agnes Irvine Scott, a Scots-Irish immigrant who upheld a strong sense of integrity and intellectual curiosity. Her son Col. George Washington Scott was the college’s primary benefactor, and the Rev. Frank Henry Gaines, minister of Decatur Presbyterian Church, was the founding president.
Initially named the Decatur Female Seminary in 1889 and renamed the Agnes Scott Institute in 1890, the college was chartered as Agnes Scott College in 1906 and was the first institution of higher education in Georgia to receive regional accreditation.
Agnes Scott sits on 100 acres shaded with some of the state’s oldest trees. Our hometown is Decatur, a city that lies six miles from the center of Atlanta. MARTA (Atlanta’s rapid transit) stops three blocks from campus.
The Collegiate Gothic and Victorian red brick-and-stone buildings have won national awards for design and resulted in Agnes Scott’s recognition for the second most-beautiful campus in the country by The Princeton Review’s Best 361 Colleges (2006). Our campus consists of 29 buildings and an apartment complex.
A $120 million building program in the past decade added a new campus center, chapel and the multidisciplinary Mary Brown Bullock Science Center. There were also major renovations to the library, dining hall and observatory in addition to landscape/hardscape and parking improvements.

Post-Bacc & Graduate Programs
Post-Bacc Pre-Med Program
Our program is designed for non-science majors who can take the required pre-med courses in a challenging program that prepares them for the rigor of medical school. Our small class sizes and accessible faculty provide an enriching, stimulating program in which you can take this journey with people who are experiencing the same challenges.
This 12-month program—the only one offered in Georgia—features comprehensive studies in pre-medical laboratory sciences available through our undergraduate departments. The program features small classes, exceptional science and laboratory facilities and personalized attention from our professors. We’ve also instituted a linkage agreement with the Mercer University School of Medicine so that our students who are Georgia residents and meet the requirements can get a jump-start on medical school.
